Title: Defining Diarrhea: Validating and improving symptoms-based measures of pediatric diarrhea
Summary: Diarrhea is a major contributor to global child morbidity and mortality with an estimated 2 billion cases and 525,000 deaths every year. Most epidemiologic studies, surveillance programs and trials measure diarrhea using caregiver-reported symptoms. For her dissertation work, Kristen conducted a large validation study of caregiver-reported stool consistency within two clinical trials in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. She used the resulting misclassification estimates to adjust for measurement error and also explored variation in viral species richness across stool consistency types.
