The Director of Staffing and Operations is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, administering and managing departmental staff recruitment, onboarding, advancement, performance evaluations, STAR awards, professional development and training, and separation processes. Reporting to the Academic Program Manager 2, this position manages the human resources and staffing needs of the research and education programs housed within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, with support from direct reports and assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. This position will be responsible for creating and implementing a staff engagement program within the department, soliciting input and participation from stakeholders across teams. Program Evaluation to enhance, Implementation, Integration, and Adaptation (2 units), to begin Winter 2025

This course offers approaches to evaluating an evidence-informed health program or intervention implemented in a clinical or public health setting, leveraging methods in implementation science. Topics to be covered include: use of logic models, evaluation frameworks, and mixed- or multi-method approaches to develop an evaluation plan; systematic collection of information to: 1) understand if and how a program/implementation strategy is being implemented; 2) improve program/implementation strategy effectiveness; and/or 3) make decisions about future programming, including supporting integration and adaptation that meet the needs of the implementation context. With this new Directorship comes an opportunity to revise and update the existing curriculum. Interested individuals are encouraged to include emerging implementation science topics like adaptation, integration, sustainability, and health equity frameworks. The Master’s and Certificate in Health Data Science in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, UCSF is seeking a Teaching Lead to partner with the Program Director and Associate Program Director in teaching, supporting curriculum development, capstone research, and student mentorship for the degree programs.
The Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics (DEB) in the UCSF School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Teaching Leader to assist in curriculum design and implementation for the Master’s in Health Data Science degree program (MiHDaS) and the Health Data Science certificate program (CiHDaS). The Master of Science in Health Data Science is a two-year, seven-quarter program and the Certificate is a one-year, four-quarter program. The second year of the Master’s program is primarily focused on a Capstone project leading to first-author paper in biomedical research. Graduates of the programs are expected to be prepared for careers in academic research, biotech industry, and government. These programs are currently in their second year and are expected to support 40 to 50 students annually. Strong candidates will be biostatisticians/data scientists with high enthusiasm for teaching, who have outstanding communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Candidates should have a strong interest in developing health data science curriculum, teaching, and tutoring students. The ideal candidate will have had experience in research, applications, and education for health data science. Previous University level classroom teaching experience is preferred.
The role will additionally require administrative work for the programs and individual tutoring of students for their Capstone projects.

The second year of the Master’s program is primarily focused on a Capstone project leading to a first-author paper in a peer-reviewed biomedical, machine learning or statistical research journal. Graduates of the programs are expected to be prepared for careers in academic research, biotech industry and government. These programs are currently in their second year and are expected to support 40 to 60 students annually. Strong candidates will be biostatisticians/data scientists with excellent skills and experience in teaching, who have outstanding communication, collaboration and organizational skills. Candidates should have a strong interest in developing health data science curriculum for current learners at UCSF, and in expanding the reach of our programs through online education and other alternative formats of delivery. Early career faculty interested in gaining leadership experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
The individual will be jointly responsible for overall management of these educational programs, including curricular planning, student mentoring, administrative tasks, and for helping to drive their continued excellence and growth. This position will report to the Head of the Health Data Science Program, John Kornak, PhD.
The position will be supported at a level of 15% to 25% FTE depending on final roles and responsibilities.

Course Director for Epidemiologic Methods (EPI 203)

Epidemiologic Methods I is a core course that is central to the Training in Clinical Research (TICR) Program. The course covers introductory topics to epidemiology including study design, measures of disease occurrence, methods to measure exposure disease associations, causation, interactions, biases (selection, measurement), and confounding. The course is offered as a 4-unit course annually in the Fall Quarter and draws students from the TICR Program, Epidemiology and Translational Science PhD Program, the MAS in Health Data Science Program, and other programs at UCSF. Weekly course activities include lectures and small group discussions.
The prospective course director(s) should be an expert in epidemiology. Co-Directorship of this course is welcome and encouraged. Applicant(s) should have a passion for and demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Course Director for Introduction to Clinical Informatics

Introduction to Clinical Informatics is a new 2-unit course that covers health information systems and their use for health care delivery with an emphasis on clinical informatics research, maintaining scientific rigor in implementation, measurement, and evaluation, and health equity. This course is an elective for the Master’s in Clinical and Epidemiological Research and Advanced Training in Clinical Research certificate programs and also draws students from the Epidemiology and Translational Science PhD Program and other programs at UCSF. By the end of the course, students are expected to understand the use of clinical informatics, analyze challenges in the equitable use of clinical informatics, apply epidemiologic methods to the evaluation of clinical informatics interventions, and design a clinical informatics project. Weekly course activities include lecture and in-person discussion sessions. Some course activities may occur online or asynchronously.
The prospective course director should be an expert in clinical informatics, but need not have deep expertise in all domains of clinical informatics. The applicant should have a passion for excellence in teaching. The course is a new course and development of a syllabus and teaching materials will be required. The course director may adapt material from previous lectures, presentations, or courses. This course will be offered in the summer quarter.
