Recruiting a sufficient number of patient volunteers is one of the most difficult challenges in running large clinical trials: 80% of trials experience enrollment delays and 20% fail to meet enrollment targets. Developing new trial designs that require fewer patients would have a significant impact on the clinical trials landscape. Dr. Fisher will describe how machine learning-based generative models can be used to simulate potential outcomes for patients in trials — e.g., what would likely happen to this patient if she were to receive a placebo? — and how these "digital twins" can be leveraged to design and run clinical trials that require up to 50% fewer patients.
