Malaria infection during pregnancy is a major contributor to the high rates of low birth weight and neonatal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. While there are existing strategies to prevent the adverse consequences of malaria, the efficacy of these tools has been compromised by the emergence of mosquito resistance to pyrethroid insecticides used in nets and parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs. This dissertation talk will evaluate three alternative malaria prevention strategies for pregnant women, including new types of bed nets that can overcome resistance, more efficacious antimalarials, and other vector control tools.
