National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. NHANES combines health interviews and physical examinations to produce nationally representative health surveillance data. These data are used to develop clinical guidelines and national health policy that directs and designs health programs and services. Using mobile examination centers that travel across the nation, NHANES examines roughly 5,000 individuals in 15 counties annually. Its data are used to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for major diseases and to monitor chronic medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
