Informatics Tools for Health Disparities Research

EPI 226 Winter 2026

This course is for learners interested in accessing data sources and using informatics tools that are helpful in identifying cohorts, developing research questions, and conducting health disparities research. Topics will include finding, managing, manipulating, mining, and analyzing a variety of data types. Lectures will cover informatics research projects that address health disparities. Learners will gain access to tools and data sources, and there will be hands-on activities.

Objectives

Upon completion of the courses, students will be able to:

  1. Develop health disparities related research questions.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of UCSF clinical data warehouse structure and how to access tools.
  3. Master key skills in using UCSF’s data tools.
  4. Apply informatics research methods to answering health disparities questions.

Format

Course content will be delivered through weekly interactive lectures. These will take place on Wednesdays from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, Jan. 7 to Mar. 18 and will be held via zoom.

Grading

Grading based upon participation, quizzes, written work.  An optional 1-unit of independant study course work is available upon request from Course Director. 

Only UCSF students (defined as individuals enrolled in UCSF degree or certificate programs) will receive academic credit for courses. Official transcripts are available to UCSF students only. A Certificate of Course Completion will be available upon request to individuals who are not UCSF students and satisfactorily pass all course requirements.
