Internal Medicine/ Preventive Medicine (IM/PM) Residency Track with Kaiser Permanente San Francisco

The IM/PM joint training program is designed for physicians with a dual interest in clinical medicine and population-level interventions. The four-year program includes all requirements needed to be board-eligible for internal medicine, and public health and general preventive medicine.

Training Components by Program Year

PGY-1 and PGY-2: The first two years are similar to a categorical internal medicine track. Five months of the first two years incorporate aspects of public health. Each PGY-2 resident takes the Designing Clinical Research course at UCSF. They design a research project that can form the basis for their MPH capstone project. Support for resident projects is available through the UCSF Prevention Research Center. Residents rotate in infectious diseases and occupational medicine and do an introductory course on preventive medicine and quality improvement.

PGY-3: Residents earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. Students supplement their public health coursework during the semester with longitudinal health department rotations. Meanwhile, they maintain clinical skills through a weekly continuity clinic and two months of inpatient rotations at Kaiser.

PGY-4: After their MPH, residents apply their public health and clinical skills to many experiences. They rotate with UCSF-affiliated research institutes, population-based electives and do full-time health department rotations. They also complete their remaining dual board certification requirements in internal medicine, public health, and general preventive medicine. These requirements include three months of inpatient rotations, four to five months of public health/population health rotations and two to three months of electives.

PGY-4 residents also serve as chief residents. In that role, they lead the Quality Improvement curriculum and mentor junior IM/PM residents.

Finally, PGY-4 residents may engage in clinical outcomes and translational research at the KP Division of Research.

How to Apply

The IM/PHGPM residency program accepts two residents per year. Competitive applicants will have demonstrated experience in population health, such as projects pertaining to epidemiology or public health departments. Interested students are invited to apply to the combined program as a separate and unique program through the ERAS application website. Applicants will find the combined IM/PHGPM program by selecting “Internal Medicine/Preventive Medicine” from the drop-down list of Specialties on the NRMP website. The specific ACGME ID number for the combined program is 751-05-44-011.

Please note that IM/PHGPM applicants will have a separate interview with each program, one with the internal medicine program at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco and another interview with the UCSF Public Health and General Preventive Medicine program. All interviews will be conducted via a virtual format for the upcoming interview season; no in-person interviews or visits will occur. We will host a virtual evening mixer event dedicated to IM/PHGPM track applicants.
