The Clinical and Translational Science Training Institute's Yearlong Inquiry Program is a yearlong predoctoral training program open to UCSF Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry students. The program provides training and mentorship to predoctoral students in clinical and translational research methodology and practice. Students who wish to participate must take a year off from their studies and commit one year (July-June) to clinical and translational research work under the guidance of a UCSF mentor.
Eligibility
SOM applicants must be currently enrolled in the UCSF School of Medicine and must apply through the Inquiry Funding Office. School of Dentistry applicants should contact Dr. Lisa Berens. School of Nursing applicants should contact Dr. Sandra Weiss. Applicants must be predoctoral and U.S. citizens.
UCSF medical students wishing to apply for an international fellowship with a UCSF faculty mentor should apply to both the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation as well as through the Inquiry Funding Office; see International Clinical Research Fellowship for more information.
Program Activities
- Coursework: All YIP fellows take Designing Clinical Research and Responsible Conduct of Research (late July/early August).
- Works-in-Progress (WIP): Every other week, in person at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus, fellows gather to hear their peers present their research and to learn from faculty on a range of topics, from ethical considerations in research to manuscript preparation (August through May).
- Translational Science: An annual meeting organized by the Association for Clinical and Translational Science, bringing together researchers, clinicians, and industry leaders to advance medical innovations through scientific sessions, workshops, and networking. Students submit abstracts, attend the meeting, and present their posters (mid-April).
- Inquiry Program Colloquium: Each student gives an oral presentation of their work to mentors and program leadership (late May).
