The Clinical and Translational Science Training Institute's Yearlong Inquiry Program is a yearlong predoctoral training program open to students in UCSF Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. The program provides training and mentorship to predoctoral students in clinical and translational research methodology and practice. Students who wish to participate must take a year off from their studies and commit one year (July-June) to clinical and translational research work under the guidance of a UCSF mentor.
Eligibility
SOM applicants must be currently enrolled in the UCSF School of Medicine and must apply through the Inquiry Funding Office. School of Dentistry applicants should contact Dr. Lisa Berens. School of Nursing applicants should contact Dr. Jill Esquivel. Applicants must be predoctoral and U.S. citizens.
UCSF medical students wishing to apply for an international fellowship with a UCSF faculty mentor should apply to both the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation as well as through the Inquiry Funding Office; see International Clinical Research Fellowship for more information.
Program Activities
- Coursework: All YIP fellows take Designing Clinical Research and Responsible Conduct of Research (late July/early August).
- Works-in-Progress (WIP): Every other week fellows gather to hear their peers present their research and to learn from faculty on a range of topics, from ethical considerations in research to manuscript preparation (August through May).
- Journal Club: Fellows and invited guests meet four times during the year to discuss a paper in depth (August/November/February/April).
- Inquiry Symposium: A large scientific poster session that includes posters from all four UCSF schools and the five disciplines. All YIP fellows create a scientific poster and then present their work to a group of their peers and answer questions. It's a fun event and is always well-attended. (Early May)
- Inquiry Program Colloquium: Each student gives an oral presentation of their work to mentors and program leadership (late May).
